hmm, ok. Yes,agree, there def is some unnecessary barrel movement, drawbacks of contrast af detection.

Thanks. Unfortunately, macro is already off and high performance on. In macro mode, the lens extends even further…maybe i am just paranoid as performance is similar to 5d m3…just the barrel movement each time seems to be unnecessary…
Hi metamind, this happens when the camera is in macro mode, I am pretty sure that’s the case you are describing, get out of macro mode and it will speed up af considerably. hope this helps.

Hi Mike!
I do have a question concerning af on the X100s: In you comparison video the X100s seems to lock focus (on the bike) in super speed and the typical af-motor movement (moving the lens barrel) is not audible (which might be due to the fact, that the video camera simply does not record the sound)…With my X100s, I experience a movement: EACH time when pressing the button half way down for focussing, the barrel moves out completely and then back in, until focus snaps in position. This is not classic “focus hunting”, as it only moves forward and then back in once, before locking focus. Nevertheless, it is a little bit irritating, as it does not seem to appear in some videos I have seen, including yours. So, the question is: Does your barrel move every time, too ?
thanks Derek! Prefocused. wouldn’t recommend af for this shot.

this is amazing , I never though a tiny compact camera can do something like this, it is truly outstanding shot!
One Question: does the AF of the X100s this great in real life or is it just you (I mean you are just amazing)?
thanks for sharing this.

Damn! I can dream of making it to NYC for your workshop. So inspiring…
