Another “less is more” clip, shot during my fashion shoot with

Xu. Limited my equipment to the Canon 5D2 and the 50mm 1.2 with a Vari filter. My previous blog entry generated a lot of emails wondering how the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 compared to the 50mm 1.2. I have used the Zeiss for a couple of month and really loved it. The Zeiss, a lot smaller, the focusing ring felt a little better, bokeh looked equally beautiful, the only reason I decided to switch to the 50mm 1.2 was AF. It was just too difficult to mf all the time during photo shoots. I was also really excited to use my new IDC follow focus for this shoot, which turned out to be perfect for my workflow. Simple, very good focus pulling and most importantly, I was able to leave it on the camera during the photo session and alternate between photo/video without changing equipment. I have worked with the Redrock micro and liked it a lot, however many of my videos are created during photo shoots and the IDC suits me better . If you shoot video only and are looking for a great expandable package, go for the Redrock micro DSLR kit, photo/video, check out the IDC.

What did you use for post? When ever I use Final Cut Pro or After Affects to “slowmo” footage, it winds up really choppy – especially when I slow it down as much as you did for this video. Is there something I don’t know? The 5D doesn’t shoot at very high frame rate, so what’s the trick hear? Appreciate your feed back. Thanks!

Love this video and information. I was researching follow focus systems that fit my workflow, and it was watching your Youtube video (subscriber) regarding the IDC system zero follow focus that helped me to make my choice. My IDC follow focus will be here thursday, and I picked up a Zacuto pro viewfinder. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi, great site… very inspiring!
I just wanted o ask you about the iDC 5D Run & Gun package.
Would the Follow focus work with the Voigtlander ultron 40mm?
Im worried the lens is too short for an accurate mounting…
    Thanks a lot!

thanks Tom, depends, if its mainly for video and af is not important, the zeiss, no contest, great optical quality and fantastic mf ring. The only reason I am shooting w the 50mm 1.2 now it has af and a pretty good focusing ring for mf during video shoots. The 1.4 is optically excellent, but the mf ring is terrible, this may vary from copy to copy, I tried a few but found pulling smooth focus was impossible.

    Mike,

    Fantastic video, came together nicely.
Going back to your post about the Zeiss 50mm 1.4,
I’m trying to decide whether to go the Zeiss 50 1.4 or the Canon 50mm 1.4…
    Can you give any input?

    Cheers,
    Tom

One request, can you please have your links open in a separate window so I don’t have to navigate away from your site? I love checking out your links, but hate leaving your site!

    Cheers! Keep it up!

Hey Mike, thanks for the info. I’m about to buy the 5DII and have a lot to learn for shooting video. FOCUS is my biggest concern. Going to check your link to IDC right now.

I’ve been following you for a while and I do like your work. This was your best so far in my taste. Great! It stopped time for a minute. I liked your choice of music. Dramatic for the dramatic pictures. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! :)

thanks Rick. Oh, gotta check it out, I use the hood loop for my GH1 and love it, on the 5D the glue on Zacuto Z finder, works w/o problems when mounded on the kit.

Nice vid Mike. How do u like that run and gun kit? Is the hood loop any good? There’s a new one out that tilts for low angles.

Great stuff! Thanks for all the info! Your videos look great, really like the style. Was wondering how you did the flickering effect. It looks really nice and smooth! Was that after effects?
