Art in progess: Don’t Forget The Book: by Juan Aaron Castillo

Art in progess #1: Don’t Forget The Book: by Juan Aaron Castillo from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

My friend Juan told me about this project-it sounded quite interesting-a contribution to an overseas art show he had been invited to. I asked him if he would allow me to follow him around for a couple of days as I would try to capture the process. I promised to stay mostly “invisible” and keep equipment to a minimum since he prefers privacy at work. I have always been fascinated by how artists work, because most of the time we can’t imagine the process when we look at the finished piece displayed in a gallery. I hope you enjoy this clip as much as I did shooting it.
Equipment info after the break

I shot this clip on a borrowed Canon 5DmkIII with the Nikkor 50mm f1.4, mostly wide open or at f1.6. Man, shooting with the 5DmkIII was like having dinner with an ex-girlfriend I never got over with!
Full manual settings, no problems navigating the menu ;) If I hadn’t been able to use my Nikkor lens, focusing would have been frustrating since Nikon/Canon lenses rotate in different directions and I am used to Nikkors these days.
