After the first snaps with the D800 it became obvious that the Nikkor 24-120mm f4G struggles to deliver on this sensor wide open. Today I tried the Nikkor 50mm 1.8G and really like the results. One of my subjects offered $10 bucks for the camera. I asked for $50 and he just shook his head. Told you Gaffa tape works :) the rest after the break

Great portraits. I wouldn’t use a 50mm for close-up portraits though. Maybe stand back a little and crop the image. With the D800 you have some megapixels to spare.

Nice images, I really like the one at the top. i don’t think I could react as nicely if someone put a large DSLR up close to me. In fact I recall when I was a kid we had a photographer take some family photos at our home and she brought a rangefinder which I dismissed, being more impressed with SLR’s. I was shocked to see how nice the images turned out. It was the relaxed atmosphere of the whole experience that helped. Nice images all around though, interesting faces and light.

thanks Bob! the D800 with the 50mm looks serious, though still very “normal”, AF is lightening fast and precise, I always find it is a little easier to break the ice with a smaller camera, the Nex 7 doesn’t look like a serious camera and my subjects are more relaxed from the very beginning

Mike: Which rig did you prefer for your portrait shooting setup, in both the handling and the results? Just curious. Very strong portraits from both rigs (could it have something to do with your eye and ability to relate to people?:-) Bob
