A great day for the parade, sunny and mild temperatures, tons of people lined up to watch. My impressions of the Sony A77 after this shoot:
No glitches with the unofficial 1.04 firmware, starts up a lot faster and the switch between LCD and EVF is instantaneous now, didn’t compare jpegs since I always shoot Raw.
Extremely fast and accurate AF on both, the Sony 70 300G and the Sigma 8 16mm,
the 70 300mmG lens is fantastic, despite the slow aperture 4.5-5.6, very compact and image quality is impressive already wide open
the ultrawide Sigma 8 16mm is in a league of its own, we finally have the equivalent of the by now legendary Nikon 14 24mm for a cropped sensor (for about 1/3 of the price! The sigma 8 16mm is also available in Canon mount)
I LOVE the articulated LCD, EVF and the discrete shutter sound on this camera, it makes such a difference to get a view on low shooting angles and overhead shots, rather then just shooting from the hip and pointing the camera above the crowd. I was also very impressed how the Sony HVL F58AM handflash performed, TTL metering is spot on. My new favorite accessory for the A77 is the Shape Paparazzi I, mainly for video shoots but it is also quite handy for stills.
