Rolling Shutter compared: D90 vs

5D mark II vs GH1 vs 7D
from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

Quick and dirty test on rolling shutter. The pan speed was not controlled and varies from camera to camera. Aperture 8 – 11, Shutter speed 1/80. (except for D90, shutter was not looked and most likely higher) ISO 100. Frame rates: D90 at 24p, 5D2 at 30p GH1 at 24p, 7D at 30p. the first half of the pan is extremely fast, the second half is closer to “real life”, keep in mind this is an extreme test and by no means scientific . A lot of you asked me to do this test and I find it interesting but it has never bothered me during my shoots using this cameras. 2. D90 clip is not 1/80 second. More comments attached to vimeo comment area, since that’s where most of the comments are.

  3. Hi Mike,

did you try to play with this plugin to prevent it?

    I wonder if it’s useful or not…

  4. Hi

I tried to invent some sort of benchmark test for rolling shutter while testing my 7D. I came up with an idea to drive a car at certain speed with the camera pointing sideways and observe the skew on street lights.
What I ended up with was this (sorry for non-english titles):

I think it would be a good idea to post still frames cut from the movie rather than the movie itself, they give you time to see the actual skew (marked with red lines on the movie)

    Regards

  5. The rolling shutter effect on the GH1 varies with the frame rate. The 1080p 24fps mode is clearly the worst. The 720p mode 60fps is a LOT better. The 720p 30fps MJPEG mode is somewhere in between. I tested by shooting the sweep arm of a metronome.

Rolling shutter does not seem to vary based on shutter speed.

I can imagine that there may be similar variation with other cameras.
