Rolling shutter comparison, Canon 5D mark II vs Panasonic Lumix GH2 @ identical panning speed, shutter roll, jello effect

After receiving many emails asking for this, here it is, you might, just like I was, be surprised to see the results!

I kept this one in b/w to avoid image quality comparisons, this is just about the jello/shutter roll, nothing more. Enjoy, don’t get upset, it is as it is. One thing to keep in mind, very few scenarios will require extreme panning speeds like in this clip, for the most part, no one in their right mind will swing the camera back and forth like that in a real life shooting scenario. Only situations like a fast car chase or a train going by at high speed for example will make this effect very noticable.
Settings on both cameras: 1080/24p, shutter speed: 1/50, aperture f8, Iso 160. If you don’t like your 5D2 and/or GH2 anymore after viewing this, I will gladly accept donations (with or w/o lens) and pay for shipping!

Wow… I would think that the GH2 having a sensor (I’m guessing a number) two years newer then the one in the 5DII it would cope better with rolling shutter… It does 720p60 so the sensor is obviously faster at shuffling data, also Panasonic should have more video expertise then Canon, why is rolling shutter the same?

I’ve used both cameras and yes the GH2 is more video like, they both have pros and cons. 5DII is great in low light, the GH2 has less problem with aliasing, the fold out screen and white clip warning is very handy. The GH2 doesn’t let you change ISO when rolling like the 5DII, and it doesn’t to 1080p25 (Only 1080i50, 1080p24, 720p60) but hopefully a firmware change will fix that.

    Hi mike
Have you used the 1:1 crop mode in the gh2. It seems like such a cool feature.
Panasonic seems to be on to something… plus the clean hdmi out seems like a big plus. Have you tried it yet? Oh…And for the money, a steal, eh.
However the only way I could justify a purchase of the gh2 would be if I didn’t have anything else to do but to shoot and plan films or if my d90 broke. So it’ll have to wait a year or two…

Hi Mike: Really appreciate your GH2/5DMkII comparison videos. From what i have gathered, a FF and M4/3 seems to make a great pair for an A/B cam setup.

the right tool for the right job….too early to tell, both excellent and shine in different shooting environments, the GH2 is def the most video like (that’s a compliment) of all hybrids I have used
