High noon and high speed sync-the easy way

High noon and high speed sync-the easy way

A nice bonus feature when shooting with the Fuji X100s, X100 or Ricoh GR/Nikon Coolpix A is the hss capability, no fuss, no need for PocketWizard‘s or 3rd party knock offs and calibration headaches. Any old strobe or flash gun with manual output will let you shoot at shutter speeds up to 1/2000! I even managed to shoot at 1/4000 without any sync problems with the X100s. More after the break

For the shot above I used the Ricoh GR with the 21mm wide angle attachment, attached my Nikon dedicated Qflash basic powered by the lightweight Cyclone Bolt battery pack. A very simple and lightweight setup.

A more serious setup would look like this (image below) Ricoh GR (with 21mm attachment) modified
bracket in vertical mode and the Impact LiteTrek, which makes for one of the best budget and lightweight travel strobes. Short recycling times, very easy to setup, a simple knob to control output from 1/1 to 1/64, audible ready signal, a 10sec modeling light, master or slave mode, all in a fairly small package. As a bonus I can also power my Quantum flash guns from the battery unit.

Equipment list:
Ricoh GR1
Ricoh GV-1 viewfinder
Ricoh GW-2, 21mm wide angle attachment (not yet available-try ebay)
Fuji X100s
Custom Bracket
modified X100 grip to fit Ricoh GR (found on ebay)
Quantum Flash basic
Bolt Cyclone power pack
Impact LiteTrek
Benro Tripod
Vintage Gitzo Magnesium tripod head

Thanks Edwin. Yes, my orig plan was to get the Nikon A because of Nikon’s excellent flash system, ended up with the GR instead, both sync up to 1/2000 with any manual/non-dedicated flash or studio strobe, the same goes for the RX1, up to 1/2000.

Great post! I just want to confirm, you can sync at up to 1/2000 with the Ricoh and Nikon? Do you have any experience with the Sony RX1?
