Reminds Me: Christy Thompson: Panasonic Lumix GH1 and GH2

Received my GH2 towards the end of this project, we shot everything at 720/60p, at that setting,

the footage looks pretty much the same, from both cameras. (GH1 was not hacked). The GH2 allows to shoot at 1080/24p (24mbps) and that is a totally different story and what I have seen so far, is very impressive, but more on that later. My first impressions of the GH2 during this shoot: The high resolution viewfinder is a dream to use, the higher refresh rate is also very nice, af is a lot faster, being able to connect an external monitor and using it during recording is great! Overall, the GH2 is a big improvement over its predecessor. The control button layout changed which made it frustrating going back and forth between the two cams, the batteries are not compatible (come on, Panasonic, was that necessary?) and no spares available as of this writing. Another thing I noticed, the white balance presets on the GH2 are totally off, now I am going to wait on the final verdict on that until I receive my second GH2, but it looks like Panasonic tuned the wb towards brown/yellow. The AWB works fine and everything is as it should be using K settings (2.5k -10k), but forget the daylight, cloudy, shade and tungsten presets, they are totally off. The main lens for this was the Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f0.95, it is a dream on the GH2 and makes for a killer setup, I also used the 14 140mm lens in manual focus mode and was surprised how easy it was to pull focus with it. If you have any doubts (like I did) about upgrading from the GH1, go for it, the GH2 is totally worth it and a very good value for the money!

  3. Really like this video. Playing it through my computer sounded really good and the shots complimented the sound track really well. I have just purchased a GH2 with 14-140 and your video fills me with expectations of videos to come. I’ve got some Leica lenses and the adaptor and I can’t wait to try them out. I look forward to seeing more of your videos shot on GH2.

  5. Fabulous, Mike. Just got my GH2 in from Canada today, and this piece is a very timely and inspiring. Have you considered a PayPal “donate” button to augment your B&H clickthrough? I would like to support your efforts to enlighten the community, but have a separate arrangement that I use for my B&H orders.

To your continued success and prosperity in the New Year,

    Bill
