Sony A7r II + LA EA3, a few more lenses tested

if you own a few Zeiss lenses with SSM in Alpha mount and are wondering how they perform on the A7rII

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out part one of this test here.

lets start with the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 SSM ZA,
incredibly fast af, no hesitation, a little better then the Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG, which is known for fast af speed when compared to other high speed 50mm optics. The Zeiss 50mm f1.4 ZA, almost identical in size to the Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG, a bit heavier, produces beautiful bokeh (better then the Sigma. It appears the focal length is longer on the Zeiss or the Sigma is not a real 50mm), no need to sell it.

The Zeiss 24mm f2 SSM, a heavy lens, if you already own it, keep it, af performance on the Sony A7rII with the LA EA3 is stellar.

The Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 SSM also works flawlessly, super fast, no hesitation.

The Zeiss 16-35mm f2.8 SSM, another amazing piece of glass, although large and heavy, works perfectly.

These Zeiss/Sony lenses in alpha mount are known for extremely fast af performance when compared to Nikon and Canon, the A7rII takes full advantage of it.

Just wanted to quickly chime in regarding the focal length difference of the Sigma DG 50/1.4. The Sigma is actually closer to about 46mm, a small but noticeable difference. Being a fan of the 45mm, and back when I regularly shot with a DSLR, I had specifically bought the Sigma for the very fact that it ran on the wider side of 50mm.

Version one, it is safe to assume, version II will behave the same way and I agree, only if you plan to use them on the A99 and the A99II, otherwise not worth it, anyway, yes, face detection works, I had no way to test it but I am pretty sure it will work as expected, I should point out, we are looking at af in still mode ,NOT in video mode. It hunts just like on the A7/r/s with the EA3, for af in video mode, FE lenses.

The Zeiss zooms are version 1, correct? Have you tried the updated SSM II lenses? Not sure if the updated ones will be worth it to adapt on a7rII. Oh and does face detect & eye AF work with the EA3?
