New York Blues: Canon EOS 7D, Canon EOS 5D mark II

New York Blues: Canon 7D, Canon 5D mark II from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

Walking around mid town, east village and china town with no particular goal other then then to capture traditional street photography inspired video clips, which I am a big fan of. Check it out and let me know what you think. 0:25through 1:10 was shot with the 7D and 12-24mm mounted on the Flycam. The rest tripod, steady bag and hand held. Lenses: 70-200mm, 100mm 2.0, Sigma 50mm 1.4, 17-55mm. 5D for clips at 1:37, 2:10 and 2:20, at ISO 3200 and 50mm 1.4 an 100mm 2.0, the rest was shot with the 7D, ISO range 400 (daylight) to 3200. Grading in FCP, mostly just desaturated and contrast added. The night clips from the 7D required noise reduction just to match the night shots from the 5D straight out of the camera, truly outstanding when it comes to low light, the 5D. The 7D exhibits more noise (about 1 to 1.5 stops behind 5D in terms of sensitivity) and can’t quite match the 5D‘s dynamic range . The two cameras complement each other very well. Hope you enjoy! Hi Mike,
For days I am looking at your work. Wow.
We are making some indie music (please see link) and I am wondering whether or not collaboration possible.
    Cheers,

Well first let me congratulation for this video, photo was just excellent. This week I will get my Canon 5D, I’m so confuse about lenses because what I see so now are so expensive and I don’t have experience with photography, I need this Canon for a documentary. What do you recommend me? I was thinking about Canon 50mm 1.2.

Just to clarify one question — “do you have to get people to agree to be videoed ? do you ever run into issues ?” — you can always shoot anyone in public places.

So are these clips shot at 30p and then conformed to 24p? Or shot at 60p and conformed to 30p or 24p? Just curious about the slo-mo, it looks fabulous.

Hy Mike, i find your blog really interesting. I follow your videos since a couple of month ago and you answer a lot of my question about cameras issues. Thank you and keep posting please. Bye Francesco from Rome, Italy

Really enjoyed seeing this video and the comments are very useful to someone new to video. Although I am sure it’s a tough question to answer, if you were only able to use the 7D or 5D, which would choose and why? I think your answer would be useful to anyone else interested in capturing this type of streetscape video in a variety of lighting conditions which adds so much mood to your work.

thanks David and Roger. Vimeo was down today, had to post it on YouTube. as for problems, I often ask people (not in this case) and move on if they don’t agree. this was shot street photography style and the photographer usually does not communicate with his subjects.

Love your movies MIke. I come around alot just to see if you have a new one up. This was great. I am a musician and love your choice of music. (Professional trumpet player) I also use a 7D and a GH1. That is how I found your stuff. Keep up the great work. :o)

Hi Mike this is brilliant, just two questions, do you have to get people to agree to be videoed ? do you ever run into issues ? and why have you moved to YouTube rather than Vimeo ?
