I did not expect the lens today! UPDATE: the Nokton 25mm f0.95 is finally in stock at bh!
GH1 (soon to be replaced by the GH2), mounted the Nokton 25mm f0.95 and met with my friend Hong (one of my favorite hair and make up artists) for coffee and asked her to pose for a few test clips. I am blown away by this lens. Does it compare to the Canon 50mm 1.2? Nope, however keep in mind, in terms of depth of field capabilities this translates to approximately a 1.9/50mm on a full frame sensor.(double focal length and max aperture)
The Nokton can be compared to the Zeiss Macro Planar 50mm F2. The Nokton doesn’t quite make it to 1:2 magnification but 1:3.9! This is fantastic, getting up close without extension tubes and close up lenses and capable to focus from 6.7inches (0.17m) to infinity! The lens is built superbly, and the focusing ring fells very smooth (just like on my 40mm and 20mm pancake lenses).
The Nokton is a fully manual lens with manual focus. You set the aperture by the aperture ring on the lens, and the lens does not communicate data to the camera body.
A pleasure to use and the best high speed lens in the m43 line up so far. I shot this clip mostly hand held, a few shots with a beanbag, at ISO 320, aperture wide open, Shutter speed 1/15 to 1/80, at AWB. The clips are ungraded, straight out of the camera. I didn’t have time to do a proper photographic test yet, this is what I have found so far:
@ .95 overall softness with very soft corners, but usable and sharpens up nicely in ps
@1.4 very sharp in the center and in the corners, extreme corners are still soft.
@2.0 extremely sharp in the center and in the corners, extreme corners are still soft.
shot at 2:3 and 16:9 ratio, the two aspect ratios toughest on corners.
