I have been wanting to shoot a short film with the Nex-7 for ages. My friend Karolina suggested Jason Roman for the “inspired by” project, we met, talked about work, acting, biking, girls, models, actresses and then he told me about the Sweet Insanity script he had written. It was right up my alley. Lots of shots in public places. A small camera like the Sony Nex-7 would be perfect for it. The weather didn’t cooperate until now and we finally managed to shoot it over the weekend.

Shooting in public places with large cameras and schlepping lots of gear can be a real PITA, especially when shooting a personal project with a very low budget. ISO settings from 100 to 800. AVCHD 1080/24p at 24mbps.
Gear used for this short:
One Sony Nex 7 with kit lens
One Sony 16mm 2.8 pancake
One Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS
One Zoom H1 Handy Recorder, Sony microphone, Sony wireless Lavelier set up
Shot mostly on a cheap steadycam and a carbon mono pod with the Manfrotto 701HDV.

You know you see a lot of NEX-7 bashing for it’s “poor” video quality and pieces like this just blow those arguments out of the water. Besides, I have to be honest, even if this was shot with vintage, grainy, 8mm, the story, cinematography and acting would have still made it a compelling short. I think people that *obsess* about the super technical issues in any production ought to watch more old movies. I for one, don’t even notice the small stuff, but I guess it’s probably because the pros make it look easy(?)

Thanks much, D! Really glad to hear you enjoyed watching it. Far from perfect but it was fun to try something completely different. I agree, our obsession with technical issues and high ISO performance often blinds us to a point that we forget about what we want to express.
