Ringers: a 16mm short film by Dikayl Rimmasch, a Canon 5D mark II shooter

RINGERS from Dikayl Rimmasch on Vimeo.

Synopsis: Frank goes on the run when his “investment” takes an unexpected turn. SUN-ARC PICTURES B/W RT 16;00 min ©2010 Written and Directed by Dikayl RImmasch. Starring Jason Alan Griffin and Sid Williams. I really dig this short “film noir” flick. Dikayl has been shooting with the Canon 5D2 since its introduction. Dikayl: ” This film was shot on 35,s16, and 16mm. Ilford stock. Unsupervised ransfers to SD (digibeta) which was hit and miss. The ending shot was composited from color stock using blue screen and a background plate shot from the Bay bridge,CA. Subway sequence was created from several locations and a train set peice. Working simultaneously right now on color correction from another film (5d mark 2 footage) and it really strikes me how much of a problem the jello is when shooting action sequences. *Oh, and we waited two days for the pigeons…”

Had to pick up a friend from Grand Central Station today. Got there 15min early, did not bring a camera but had my droid. Took some photos and a few video clips. Edited in FCP, desaturated, noise reduction, contrast adjustment. If you are wondering how the Droid holds up against, lets say, the Canon 5D mark II? check out this clip

Model Campus: Canon 5D mark II, ungraded

Model Campus from Dikayl Rimmasch on Vimeo.

My friend Dikayl Rimmasch asked me to participate in his project “model campus” a short and funny episode reminiscent of sixties college life. We (Dikayl and I) synchronized our 5D mark II’s and set
up different angles and let the talent loose. Dikayl shooting longer lenses mostly, and I had my wide and ultra wides attached and for some shots my 70-150mm. The shoot was a lot of fun and its great to work with someone as talented as Dikayl. Check out his other videos on vimeo! All model footage is ungraded, right out of the camera, this is the first edit. Click here for the color corrected, final version.Lenses we used: 70-200mm 2.8, 70-150mm 3.5, 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 17-35mm 2.8, 11-16mm 2.8 at 16mm.

Inspired by Jean Luc Godard’s BREATHLESS

inspired by BREATHLESS shot with Nikon D90 during SOMA Photo Shoot from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

A photo spread for the Cinema issue of Soma magazine. What better time to grab the D90 again and video the whole thing. The models had a good time, their acting was real, or, being under the sheets really helped? Nothing happened, alright. Mostly, thanks to Anthony, our guard for the jewelry (with a real gun), who was fascinated by the toy gun. I was planning to take the shoot outside, stage a dying scene on the sidewalk, Anthony kept us out of jail by reminding me this was a bad idea, the toy gun looked damn real and someone might call the cops. Nobody died, nobody got arrested. To see the photo story, click here, February issue. Nikon D90. 80-200mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8. 75-150mm 3.5.

The L train: Nikon D90

Nikon D90 on the L train from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

I have been taking the L train for a couple of years now. Of all trains in NYC, it is my favorite, and definitely has its own vibe. A mix of stills and video from my ongoing subway project, which started a couple years ago. The idea behind this project is to document subway life in NYC, Paris and London. Enjoy! Nikon D90, 17-35mm 2.8 wide open with soft filter. Music: Ceremony by Daniel Lauter & Suru Ekeh
