Snapshot of the Day: Father & Son: Sony SLT A77

The best camera is the one that’s with you. Shot with the Sony SLT A77 (currently in Stock at BH!).
Shutter speed 1/640, f4, ISO 800. I rarely consider a full size DSLR for street shooting, the A77 however does quite well. Translucent mirror and first curtain shutter minimize shutter sound. Just for fun, I compared the A77’s dimensions 5.59 x 4.09 x 3.15″ to the Leica M9 5.47 x 1.46 x 3.15″ almost identical in height and width! Fun times!

Low Light High Iso Video comparison: Sony Alpha SLT A77 vs. Canon 5D mark II

The Sony Alpha SLT A77, certainly the hottest hybrid camera currently on the market, class leading resolution in an APS C size sensor, unrivaled full time AF in movie and still mode, in body image stabilization during still and video takes, 1080/60p at 28mbps and 1080/24p at 24mbps , no corresponding frame rate/shutter speed limitations (allows you to shoot at lower shutter speeds then the selected frame rate) makes the A77 a very capable (and creative) video camera in good light. But one basic question remained, can the A77 deliver the goods in extreme low light? more after the break

Sony Nex E-mount Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Di III VC AF comparison to Sony 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens

As you know I am not a big fan of super zooms, however, the Sony 18-200mm drew my attention when it arrived as part of a rental package with the FS100. I was tempted to leave it in the box, except for the sake of curiosity, not expecting much, I mounted it and was totally surprised, in a good way! AF performance was very fast and accurate, totally unexpected, let’s face it, the lens is very slow which usually means sluggish AF. But not in this case, I tried the same indoors and it still didn’t disappoint.
Time to put it on the Nex 5n and see if it performs as well as it did on the FS100. And since Tamron just released the E mount 18-200mm I thought it might be a good idea to do a quick AF speed comparison before I shell out $$$ for my first universal zoom lens! more after the break

Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM and the Sony SLT A77

Every camera manufacturer has a few lenses in their line up that have that little extra to set them apart from the competition, often reason enough for a photographer to switch or add that particular outfit to his tool collection. Of course this is very subjective and largely depends on the type of photography one specializes in. The sports and wildlife photographer will choose a brand known for their high speed tele lenses, whereas the portrait/wedding/fashion photographer will go with a brand famous for their large aperture lenses. The Zeiss Distagon 24mm f2 SSM is one of those lenses. It stands out in the Sony line up and has a slight edge over its main competitors. more after the break
